See how it works

Set it up once. Run every agent from one place.

No config files. Earpiece finds the agents you already run.

  1. 1Download Earpiece

    Open it and click Connect.

Hooks go into Claude Code, Codex and Claude Desktop, with a backup of every file it edits.

  2. 2See every agent in one list

Every session, wherever it runs, with what it’s doing right now.

Click one to jump to its terminal, tab or editor window.

  3. 3Answer your first agent

When one needs you, the notch turns amber and you hear one sentence.

Click the amber notch (or press ⌥⌘I) and press 1. It carries on, and your editor gets the keyboard back.

One place for every agent.

See, answer, start and steer them without living in your terminals.

  • Everything in one panel

Click the notch: every question, approval and finished task, in one list.

Your agents are one tab over, with what each one is doing.

  • Answer from the keyboard

Press 1 to allow, 2 to always allow, 3 to deny. ⌥⌘I opens it from any app.

Every answer waits 2 seconds, so Esc can take it back.

  • Start agents from the notchPro

Pick Claude Code or Codex, a folder and a permission mode, and it starts in a terminal of its own.

Reply, stop or end it from the notch. It keeps running if Earpiece restarts.

  • Talk to your agentsPro

Hold the right Option key and say what to do. It goes to the right agent, or starts a new one.

You see where it’s going first, and Esc takes it back.

  • Knows when it needs you

A real question turns the notch amber and is read out.

Progress notes stay quiet, so the voice means something.

  • Skills and MCP, in sync

See every MCP server and skill across Claude Code, Codex and Claude Desktop.

Copy one to the others in a click, or share a pack of skills with your team.

  • Hear what matters

One spoken line when an agent finishes or needs you, in English, Spanish, French and about 30 more.

Each agent can have its own voice, too.

  • Quiet hours

Only the pings that need you get through at night.

Or nothing at all, until morning.

  • Secrets stay secret

Keys and tokens are redacted before anything is spoken.

The same goes for lines sent for a summary.

Works with every agent you run.

Claude Code

Hooks in ~/.claude/settings.json catch turn ends, permission prompts and idle, and tool activity so answered prompts stay quiet.

Codex CLI

A top-level notify command in ~/.codex/config.toml speaks at the end of every turn. Already have one? --chain keeps yours.

Claude Desktop

A local MCP server. Claude calls earpiece_notify at the end of real work and writes the line itself, in chats and Cowork.

Anything else

Any agent or tool that can run a shell command: Aider, Gemini CLI, a CI job, your own bot. Call earpiece emit, or wrap a slow command with earpiece run -- npm test.

With Pro, Talk also starts new work in the Codex app and the Claude desktop app, with your words typed in.

Open source and local first.

Built in the open, with the parts that touch your work kept on your side.

Lives on your machine

Settings, your session list and the log are plain files under ~/.earpiece. No account needed: signing in is optional.

Your keys stay yours

API keys are optional, read only when needed and never written to logs. With no OpenAI key, no transcript text leaves your machine.

Try it on your machine.

Free and open source under the MIT license. No dependencies, Node 20 or newer.

Mac app

A menu bar app with a dashboard for every session. Paste this in Terminal: it installs the latest version and opens it, with no security prompt. Run it again any time to update.

curl -fsSL https://earpiece.dev/install.sh | bash

Or download the disk image:

Download for Mac

Version 0.4.5, universal (Apple Silicon and Intel). The disk image isn’t notarized yet, so macOS asks you to allow it once under System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway. After that, updates arrive in the notch. All releases

Terminal
git clone https://github.com/adissocrazy/earpiece.git
cd earpiece
node bin/earpiece.mjs install
npm link
earpiece test
You should hear Earpiece say hello. Restart any running Claude Code or Codex sessions so they pick up the hooks. earpiece uninstall puts everything back.

Questions.

Something missing? Open an issue on GitHub.

Is Earpiece another agent?
No. The agents you already run, such as Claude Code and Codex, write the code. Earpiece is where you see all of them at once, answer their questions, jump to their terminals and, with Pro, start and steer them from the notch.
Can I start agents from Earpiece?
With Pro, yes. Pick Claude Code or Codex, a folder and a permission mode, and it starts in a terminal of Earpiece’s own. Reply, stop or end it from the notch, or open its terminal. Agents keep running if Earpiece restarts. Talk goes further: hold the right Option key, say what to do, and it goes to the right agent or starts a new one.
Does my code leave my machine?
Only if you add an OpenAI key. Then the tail of each agent’s final message (up to 6,000 characters) is sent to write the summary. Leave the key unset and nothing is sent: Earpiece speaks the first sentence with your system voice. With Pro or your own TypeSafe key, the same tail (up to 4,000 characters, keys and tokens removed) also goes to Jev, which only answers whether the turn asks you something.
How does it know when an agent needs me?
With Pro or your own TypeSafe key, Jev (TypeSafe’s decision model) reads each finished turn in about a third of a second. A real question turns the notch amber and is read out; a progress note shows as “Continuing in the background” and stays quiet. Without a key, a turn that ends in a question mark counts as needing you.
Can I answer without the mouse?
Yes. Press ⌥⌘I from any app to open the notch panel, then 1, 2 or 3 to answer, J and K to move, R to reply. Every answer waits 2 seconds, so Esc takes it back. Closing the panel gives the keyboard back to the app you were in.
Does Earpiece collect anything?
The Mac app sends usage stats a few times a day: a random install id, the app and macOS versions, which agents are connected and which features are on. Never your code, prompts, project names or keys. They’re anonymous unless you sign in with Google, and then part of your account until you sign out. Signed out, turn them off in General. The CLI sends nothing. The privacy policy, linked in the footer, has the details.
Do I need API keys?
No. Both are optional. A Smallest.ai key gives you more natural voices, and an OpenAI key gives you better summaries. Without either, your system voice reads the first sentence.
Does it cost anything?
Earpiece is free and MIT licensed: every agent in one panel, answers from the notch, jump to any terminal, and Skills and MCP sync. Bring your own Smallest.ai or OpenAI key (they bill you directly) or use the system voice at no cost. Earpiece Pro (3 days free, then $10 a month, $96 a year, or $179 once for life) adds starting and steering agents from the notch, Talk, and natural voices and summaries on our keys so you don't need any. See the pricing page.
Which agents does it work with?
Any agent you run. Claude Code, Codex CLI and Claude Desktop (chats and Cowork) connect in one click. Any other agent or tool that can run a shell command, such as Aider, Gemini CLI or a CI job, works through earpiece emit or earpiece run. With Pro, Talk can also start work in the Codex app and the Claude desktop app. Adapters for more agents are welcome on GitHub.
Can each agent have its own voice?
Yes. Browse voices with earpiece voices, then run earpiece voice <id> --agent codex. You can also have lines start with the agent’s name.
Will it slow my agents down?
No. Hooks return within milliseconds. Summaries and audio run in a detached worker, and only one line plays at a time across all your agents.
What about Linux and Windows?
macOS works out of the box. On Linux, install a player such as paplay or ffplay, plus espeak-ng for the offline voice. Windows is untested, though WSL with PulseAudio should work.
Will it read out my secrets?
No. Keys and tokens are redacted before a line is spoken or sent for a summary.
Where are my settings and logs?
In ~/.earpiece on your machine: your config, a session registry and a log. The installer backs up every file it edits, and earpiece uninstall puts them back.
I need quiet for a while. How?
earpiece quiet 60 keeps Earpiece silent for an hour while updates still show in the notch. earpiece off turns it off until you switch it back on, and earpiece stop cuts the current line and clears the queue. Quiet hours can let only “needs you” through at night.
